Funding issues have not canceled upcoming trips for Blue Devil athleticl teams.

GATE CITY "? Officers with the Virginia State Police just completed two days of sifting through the financial records of Gate City High School investigating possible embezzlement by a school employee.
Scott County Superintendent of Schools Jim Scott and Gate City High Principal Michael Brickey confirmed the investigation on Thursday, both stating that an authorized county auditor has also been ordered to conduct a full examination of the school's financial holdings and records.
The inquiry comes after days of speculation among community members who had questioned whether athletic teams at GCHS, which are preparing for competition in Virginia High School League state finals, would have the proper funding for their trips.
"The State Police have been here since Tuesday and were given full access to any and all records connected with their investigation,"? Scott said.
"At this point, everything is very preliminary, so I am not sure of how much money we are talking about or how far back in years they are looking into. This could be something that they have to see financial records from (several or recent) years ago.
"I have heard that it could be several hundred or several thousand, but that is speculation at that point. Once the auditor completes their work and we get more direction from the State Police on what has possibly taken place with the funds in question, we will be able to take necessary action."?
Scott and Brickey both said no employee has been named as a suspect, but some personnel have been interviewed, and the VSP is still evaluating data and information.
"I anticipate some more people being asked to be interviewed by the State Police,"? said Scott.
The county's auditing firm of Hicock and Fern of Abingdon is conducting a complete review of all financial accounts that are listed under the school.
"That includes our athletic fund, academic programs, and other accounts. If anything generated or received revenue at this school, it is being looked at,"? said Scott.
Brickey dispelled rumors of the Blue Devil boys and girls varsity tennis teams being unable to travel to Radford next week for the VHSL Group A State Championship matches because of possible financial shortfalls in the account that funds the trips.
"The school board has always made sure that the funding needed for our students to attend a state event like this, be it athletic or academic, was there. That has never been in question, ever,"? said Brickey.
"Matter of fact, a gentleman came in just this afternoon and asked if he could pay the costs for the students to ride charter buses to the state finals. School supporters and the school board have always been great to support us in situations like that."?
Athletes who have qualified for VHSL Group A track and field competitions this weekend will also be assisted with funding for their trip, along with the Gate City girls softball team, which qualified for a spot in the VHSL Group A quarterfinals earlier this week, Scott said.
"If any of the funding being looked at would have involved any money dedicated for their travel, it would be bonded and through those procedures, the money is essentially insured and would be returned to the school. Right now, the funding they need for those trips is in place,"? Scott said.

I will tell you what I have caught wind of from up here in Nicklesville.

The story I heard is that the secretary took over $100,000. This money was taken out of the "recruiting" account set aside for Nick Colobro and Scott Vermillion. Colobro discovered that the money was missing a couple of weeks ago upon having a check bounce.

The alumni have already stepped in and donated enough money to replace the stolen amount, and then some. However. the town is in an uproar over the incident. So don't you all worry. The mighty Gate City Blue Devils will be back in full force because Colobro and Vermillion only missed about 2 weeks of recruiting.
